United Kingdom - Scotland

(Revised on 5/1/2012)

Notes:

  1. The list of recognized qualifications is compiled by the Social Workers Registration Board based on the best information available at the time of compilation.

  2. The list is compiled for general information and reference only without prejudice to the exercise by the Board of any of its powers and functions in assessing individual social work qualification/training programme. The Board reserves the right to revise the list of recognized qualifications (includes making new additions and deletions) as appropriate.

  3. A social work qualificationawarded in the U.K. that is accredited by the former Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work (CCETSW) (closed on 30 September 2001), or  the General Social Care Council (GSCC) of England (closed on 31 July 2013), the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC), the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC),  the Care Council for Wales (CCW) or the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC), the body succeeding the GSCC on 1 August 2013, is, in principle, recognized by the Board for registration.

  4. The list is presented in two parts, demarcated by the new accreditation system introduced in the U.K. commencing from 2003 or 2004 (subject to the region).

  5. The social work qualifications listed in Part 1 were led by the pertinent programmes with historic approval by the then CCETSW and GSCC,  and NISCC, SCCC, and CCW  which awarded a Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) for the completion of those programmes in or before 2003 or 2004, subject to the region.  An applicant for registration, who holds a qualification on the list is required to produce a copy each of the certificate in respect of the social work qualification awarded by the tertiary institution concerned and the DipSW issued by any one of the said Councils (except the HCPC).

  6. The qualifications listed in Part 2 are led by the new honours degree programmes in social work approved by HCPC (or formerly the GSCC), NISCC, SCCC, and CCW in or after 2003 or 2004, subject to the region. An applicant for registration who holds a qualification on the list is required to produce a copy of the certificate in respect of the social work qualification awarded by the tertiary institution concerned.

  7. The Board will consider, on an individual basis, an application for registration filed by a holder of a social work degree that is led by a distance education programme or an off-shore programme, notwithstanding that the programme is approved by any one of the said Councils.

  8. As the Councils may from time to time review their accreditation criteria and revise their lists of approved programmes, any person who intends to pursue social work studies in the U.K. should assume personal responsibility to verify with the Council of the region concerned whether the programme leading to the qualification he/she expects will be approved in the year of graduation. The Board may, where appropriate, examine the U.K. social work qualification held by an applicant for registration on individual basis notwithstanding that such a qualification is led by a programme currently approved by an individual Council.  In any circumstances, the Board reserves the discretionary power to recognize any social work qualifications for registration led by the social work programmes which are approved by the respective Councils.
